Sometimes you have to take the easy way out, which is microwaving your cookie dough instead of putting it in the oven because you have a craving for chocolate chip cookies.

Can you use a microwave to cook cookie dough? 

The answer, unfortunately, is no. If you microwave the cookie dough, it won’t turn brown, but you will end up with a bunch of cookie dough.

If you are looking for that cookie from your mother’s recipe book, you are probably going to be disappointed because there are some magazines and recipes that don’t stop you from microwaving.

One of the main reasons you shouldn’t microwave cookies is that microwaves aren’t made for baking. The air within the microwave is usually not hot enough.

Microwaves work by heating the inside of the food, rather than the outside.

When you think about baking a cookie, you want the sugars on the outside of the dough to heat and be caramelized, which makes it a very nice texture.

Steps to Microwave Cookie Dough

Before starting, you’ll need cookie dough. You can make your dough or buy some in readymade stores,

  • One ball of dough should be enough for a cookie. If you have a pre-made tube, you can slice one half-inch piece with a knife.
  • Place the plate in the center of the microwave oven and heat it on high for 20 seconds.
  • If the dough isn’t burning then cook for another 20 seconds.

The center of cookies that are microwaved will be very hot. So take appropriate safety measures.


  • If you leave it for a couple of minutes, it will get a little hardened.
  • Don’t try to use a metal tray because microwaves and metal don’t play well together.
  • If you want a mega cookie, you can add a larger quantity of dough to the dish. It will hold its shape better than before. Adding ice cream and sauce is called cookie ala mode and is the perfect dessert.
  • It’s important to watch the cooking times with microwaves. Your first cookie may need some trial and error.
  • Chocolate chips are okay in the microwave, but oats and M & Ms turned tough and unpleasant.

Alternatives to Microwaving Your Cookie:

If you feel like the entire process of baking your cookie dough is too time-consuming, then using a toasting oven is the next best thing.

If you want to get quality cookies from your oven, it is probably a better option than microwaving them.

When using a toaster oven, you should consider the following.

  • The temperature of the toaster oven should be the same as your regular oven.
  • If your cookies weren’t baked quickly, that means your oven wasn’t hot enough.
  • Your toast was too hot if you didn’t spread your cookies the way you liked them or if they finished faster than you anticipated.
  • Reduce the size of your cookies and put them in the middle if they turn dark too quickly.

It is a good idea to make cookies for one or two. If you feel like your cookie dough craving will be too strong, it is a good idea to keep the dough in the fridge or freezer.

The quality of the cookies can be improved if cookies are kept in the refrigerator. There are several small-batch recipes that you can find, which could work better in the toaster oven.
