We thought they would be tough and unevenly cooked, but they were tender and had decent levels of juice.

Conventional cooking techniques will provide a slightly better result, but the difference is not huge.

How to Microwave Mussels?

  • Before cooking frozen mussels, make sure they are cold. You can place them in the fridge overnight for more tender meat, or use warm water for quicker results. If you cook them on the same day of purchase, they can keep for about a week.
  • To cover the mussels, place them on the outer rim of the microwavable plate. The arrangement will allow the mussels to steam most efficiently, as the meat will take a bit to cook thoroughly.
  • It takes about 2 to 5 minutes to cook on high. For the meat to be cooked without becoming gummy and for the shells to open correctly, this will be possible.
  • If you fully cook the meal and a couple of shells are still closed, it’s a good idea to discard the mussels.
  • Don’t serve if you don’t season accordingly. Whether you want to serve them with a creamy spaghetti sauce or sprinkle them with lemon butter, now’s the time to add whatever you want. Allow it to be spiced up and enjoy it.

How to Reheat Mussels in the Microwave?

What about cooking in the microwave? The process is more detailed as already-cooked mussels can become tough and rubbery very quickly.

However, it is possible to reheat without sacrificing the flavor.

If you are heating a dish that includes more than just mussels, such as pasta, remove the mussels from the meal, preheat the other ingredients, and then set the mussels back in the dish.


  • The mussels should be taken out of their shells. It’s not harmful to rewarm the shells, but the clams dry out the meat until it’s very rubbery.
  • You can use the shells to juice the sauces or preserve the meat. You can toss them after that.
  • Keep the meat in a small bowl so that it’s as small as possible.
  • This will allow the meat to be moist and allow the individual mussels to be warm. Keeping the heat in further, cover them with a damp paper towel.
  • When the temperature is very low, check the mussels every 15 seconds. If you want to cook something as tender as mussels, you should keep your microwave power at 30%.
  • It’s possible to cook them as warm as you want, but you have to check them frequently to make sure they aren’t overheating or drying out.
  • Re-season if necessary.

Even if they’re right out of the microwave, mussels can be a great dish for any occasion.

Is It Possible to Microwave Frozen Mussels in Shells?

For holidays and special occasions, this is the perfect microwave recipe.

It tastes good even when your guests are late because you can serve microwaved mussels. Easiness is one of the perks of frozen mussels in the microwave.

The frozen mussels must sit in shells. You risk ruining their taste if you don’t. If the mussels are dry and taste different, they aren’t good for this dish.

They are both small and large in the shells, which makes no difference to this recipe. You don’t have to control the cooking time.
